So today i got a few of the staff together at Denton Bible to talk about why we do church the way that we do. Its a simple question that isn't as simple to answer. All sorts of topics got brought up. Worship, Small Groups, Teaching, Outreach. And our lay pastor said "there is a difference between attractive and attracting". His point was to show that somethings are Attracting, they draw your eyes, your senses, they cater to your desires but overall are not attractive. Whereas being Attractive is an overall character or quality that isn't just the outer shell but the inter workings.
Now an old friend of mine once said that "emotions are the caboose of your duty". You can't just follow your emotions all the time because it would lead to ruin. Which is true, if i did everything i wanted without any responsibility then i would neglect EVERYONE in my life, which is bad.
So i think i realized that when it comes to the style of a church, style is essentially the caboose of the responsibilities treasured in that church. In the same way that the fruit of the tree depends on the roots. The caboose gets its direction from where my heart is leading it.
Overall, even though the style might not be what's exciting or necessarily new, if my heart isn't seeing the church as beautiful then it doesn't matter what the style is. So if i dont see the Church as Attractive, then how can i ever make it more Attracting.
